Long Description: Top
Kingfisher Cove is a 3.5 acre private oceanfront property, ideally located on the north end of South Pender Island on Ainslie Point Road. Our property is very sunny as it faces south on Bedwell Harbour and shares a boundary with Beaumont Marine Park which is now part of the Southern Gulf Islands National Park. The property is forested and very private. The cottage has large decks, Mexican Hammocks, a BBQ and great views. There is an excellent dock and moorage. Catch fresh crab off the dock! We get the last rays of sunshine on the island! The sun sets as late as 10 - 10:30 p.m. in the summer.

There are many nearby hiking trails and beach accesses in addition to our own. Our property and waterfront area are frequented by Hummingbirds (March until late July); Eagles, Great Blue Heron; mink; otter; seals; and many other birds and marine wildlife. At night one can often hear Owls and other wonderful sounds of nature such as the seals playing in the water below. The night sky is magnificent and our cabin had been chosen by expert and amateur astronomers as an excellent spot for skywatching. During May to late October one can sit on the rocks at Gowland Point or at Brooks Point and watch for resident pods of Orcas who frequent Boundary Pass, Swanson Channel, etc. The Pender Islands have no squirrels, no skunks, no raccoons, no bears and no cougars.

Please be sure to visit our home web site at http://www.kingfishercove.com for full details on our facility.

At Kingfisher cove, we have green globe policies and thus we strive to be as eco-sensitive and ecoaware as possible. We encourage our guests to practice the principles of refusing (at the retailer - especially excessive packaging; and join us in our efforts to recycle, reuse, compost or return nearly everything. We expect our guests to respect the very simple systems we have set up for their convenience and ours. The cottage is located in an environmentally sensitive National Park setting and we try hard to remember that privilege and we seek your cooperation in sharing the small but important responsibilities that go along with the many privileges of being able to live in such a pristine environment. Perhaps most important is fire prevention during the dry season which is May through October.

Amenities: Top
Our cottage has a dock and moorage, a large amount of private land, a superb view, lots of deck space, Mexican hammocks hanging in the shade and in the sun, an antique, double-ended soaker tub; and steps up to your private entrance to the marine park along the boundary we share with Beaumont Marine Park, part of the Southern Gulf Islands National Park. The cottage is solar powered with an inverter and thus it is regularly equipped with wall outlets, lights, and other basic electrical equipment such as a vacuum, CD player/radio, etc. A gas barbecue, dishes and cooking utensils towels and linens are provided. The cooking stove is gas and there is also a wood stove for a cozy open fire as necessary in the autumn and winter. Fire restrictions apply in the summer, island wide, and by personal policy at our cabin when conditions call for same. During spring, autumn and winter we provide the wood for your fire. A backup generator is available in case the weather if poor for many days in a row but is rarely needed during the summer. The solar power is simple to run - there is nothing to do except flick a switch and pull a cord on the generator and only if the power runs down which is very unlikely during the summer and in the first place we always leave the system well charged for guests. The great news about solar power is that one is never without power unlike the rest of the island which experiences frequent outages especially during the winter, fall and spring.

Activities: Top
Whale-watching, sailing, fishing, boating, beachcombing, birdwatching, horse riding, and golf as well as frisby golf and tennis are all available nearby. Or, rent a kayak, canoe or boat locally and explore the island's many bays and beaches, the seal colony, or take a longer charter to other Gulf Islands. Scuba diving or is also popular but one must bring their own equipment from the mainland. Go to the Farmer's market on Saturdays or to one of the local concerts or plays which are frequent and generally very popular. Island hop by ferry to other islands, or catch the water taxi to the Saltspring markert. Skywatch from the hammocks or just read a book in front of the fire in the winter. The sunsets are amazing at any time of year and each season presents its treasures such as the arrival of the hummingbirds in March. Their skydiving is the best of airshows! Hike and explore the mountaintop views of the other Southern Gulf Islands, the Olympic Peninsula and the American San Juan Islands as well as coastal British Columbia, from Mt. Norman immediately behind our property. Or, or try a stroll through the marine park, along the seaside trail through the forest of giant Douglas Fir trees. Come home and catch some crab for dinner. Eat dinner over the sea and watch the hummingbirds, the eagles, the mink, otter and seals. If you are quiet and just sit and watch you will always see some wildlife. At night the sky is magnificient and showers of meteorites are often seen on the horizon and during the new moon phase, the phosphoressence is spectacular. One can swim in fresh water at Magic Lake or for a small fee, there is one pool on the island. Tennis is available at one of several public courts and there is a frisby gulf course as well. Many local artists and craftsmen have open studio days when they are happy to show you their work.

North and South Pender Island have several restaurants for fine dining as well as more casual cafes and a superb bakery that serves specialty coffees and great small lunches.

Renters should check the ferry schedules carefully and be sure to drive directly from the ferry landing to the cottage at the time of their arrival unless otherwise instructed. Hi Mariette,

"Wow - fantastic place ! What a beautiful site you have and we just loved the artistry of cabin and surroundings. It was a great place for us to be together and enjoy the surroundings together. Everything was set up very well and seemed efficient.

We gave the bakery quite a bit of business - we all loved the bread!! Rick and I would love to come back in the spring or fall some time.

Thanks for sharing Kingfisher Cove,"

"Unfortunately, our week at Kingfisher Cove is over. What a place!!

As Australians, we particularly enjoyed seeing the Canadian wildlife close up -the seals, the otter, the mink, the porpoises and much more. We loved those amazing and colorful hummingbirds constantly zooming in on the feeders and entertaining us with their aerial displays and the American Bald Eagles seem to have found a few favourite perches over the Cove, allowing for great photo opportunities.

Our son, Kyle was was in charge of catching crabs for dinner. Fresh crabs and bubbly - what a great combination! Don't forget to bring a fish head for best ever catches!

The cabin itself was a wonderful experience - the cozy wood fire, the loft bedroom overlooking the forest and the sea; and Neville's unique artwork and interior decorating. I am taking a lot of his ideas home. However, the bathroom was the highlight of the cabin, with a huge shower looking out through the Arbutus (Madrona) trees to the sea, surrounded by orchids and candle light, we all voted it the world's best bathroom.

Thanks Mariette and Neville, for providing us with such a lovely place to start our holiday in Canada. We will be back."

"Fantastic rental home with stunning views of the ocean, hiking trails on the door step, a dock to hang out on and surrounded completely with beautiful trees and shrubs. Totally secluded setting, funky house full of interesting art and two of the best decks I have ever seen, complete with hammocks to lollygag about in. Environmentally-friendly dsign features a gorgeous bathroom and the best view from a shower ever! Perfect for a honeymoon or for total R & R. "

$950 per 7 night week (some additional restrictions apply and lower level of the cottage may not be available): or ask about shorter stays and extended stays; fuel charges may apply during low season.

Payment may be made by credit card (a signed, faxed or posted authorization is required) or by personal cheque if written on a Canadian account. At the time of booking a payment for $800 CDN (or the $USD equivalent) is required to hold the reservation. All minimum stays must be paid in full and in advance. If you are staying longer than the minimum stay, the remaining balance is due 6 weeks before the beginning of the rental period. Personal cheques, should be made payable to Mariette West and posted to the Vancouver mailing address provided, preferably by Global Priority Post, Express Post or Courier. $USD are accepted and we will give you the same exchange rate our bank gives us for on the day we receive/deposit the funds. If a balance is due us, or an overpayment has been made it will be settled when the final payment is made or upon arrival.

Our peak season weekly rate and most other rates have not changed for the year 2008 and have remained essentially the same for the past 3 years. Our property and property are more private and better located by far than most cottages available for rent on the Gulf Islands. Along with the fact that we provide a dock and moorage for your private use and the only private low bank access to the marine park, now part of the Gulf Islands National Park, we feel strongly that our rates are highly competitive. We meet all guests at the cottage and spend a good deal of time orienting each party and ensuring their comfort with the cottage, the property and the community. The property is never rented to more than one party at a time, so your privacy is maintained. We are amenable to negotiate a reduced price for couples travelling alone, who are willing to do without the lower level of the cottage, or for extended stays of several weeks. When the lower level is not rented with the rest of the cottage, it is simply locked off, and you will be the only people on the property. Also, when the lower level of the cottage is locked, you may still use the lower deck, the soaker tub, etc.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL GULF ISLAND PROPERTY IS FOR SALE
